You mentioned how the plaster in the big closet was unusual. What would you normally expect to have on the walls? Is it because your house seeems to be made (mainly?) of wood? I've lived in plenty of houses with wallpaper over plaster with no apparent problems.
Or maybe "plaster" means something different to you and me.
Puzzled, but interested ...
